End of module Self-Evaluation
What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

An awareness of layout and presentation has been useful, if not always applying it the understanding is always there and considerations are made. Other workshops such as colour theory and generally this visual language module has made me, overall more considerate to smaller and more precise issues.

What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
From the research into the letter 'A' and being directed to take a range of photograph, this had shown me that the more research (especially image based) the more informed you are when designing later on so this has really helped my development generally.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have you/will you capitalize on these?
In my work I believe I have a better background to my work, I follow a wider way of development and this allows me to learn more about the subject I am working with.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you adress these more fully?
My final resolutions are still not very strong, I need to develop my software skills and polish my presentation skills. I want the outcomes to represent how much I have learnt and how much there is to represent. I also need to keep blogging, showing my development and explaining my decisions. Some sessions we did were photographed, then not blogged straight away, resulting in a lack of evidence.

Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
Draw more, wider range of final pieces.
Practice on software, better final pieces and generally less time wasted.
Blog more regularly, a more detailed exploration and possibly a stronger appreciation for 'happy accidents'
Manage my time more effectively - to do lists, create more and time not wasted.

These are what I was considering to use as final pieces, however, I believe the simplicity of the black and white works better on its own. It shows the contrast between organic and mechanic. What is a line? has developed as a project, from single line drawings I believe it has progressed into becoming a piece that visually considers contrasts.

Investigating Layout and Colours

Using Illustrator.

The use of colour with this wasn't as effective as the simple and bold use of black. It suggests more detail with the word and the shapes created. Next I wanted to try and combine both the mechanic and organic images....

I wanted to start and explore digital drawing, by using the word 'mechanic' I started suggesting the shape of a chain I had photographed. This also follows on from the fact that I used pages of a book to explore how type can produce its own lines and shading..

I then progressed to using ink and water. Beginning with lines, then applying water to allow the ink to bleed. Expanding on the concept of a 'line'.

I wanted to start exploring combining opposites, using the photographs I took of the mechanic objects such as a chain and the bike gears.

I decided to use mixed media as I used a variety of mediums when drawing from primary sources. The use of text was important as I wanted to see the effects of type, the lines within a structured type and how they form lines themselves. When digitalising this the effects will also be very interesting.

I wanted to begin to digitalise and vector shapes from the photographs I had taken. Here is my development using illustrator software.
