I wanted to start the design process by initially exploring the logo for the product and the brand itself. I think that its important to take what I have been researching and looking at in terms of fashion branding initially but then on a wider scope, design that works. I set myself key criteria and this was how I started the development.
I wanted to play around on illustrator initially working from drawings I'd done on paper. Despite this being quite rough it did allow me to begin to visually begin to see how the letters for each word would interact.
I initially started playing around with the simple (and pretty awful) ideas just to get them down. I wanted to try both the decorative to see how they would translate however her current logo is very simple 'Man Repeller' in a serif typeface so I decided from this I wanted to move away from that aesthetic.
The next step was to try and be bold and play with the typography in a way that was 'in your face' as much as her fashion and opinions.
I wanted to try to progress with trying to create and image with the use of typography. I'd seen another companies use of typography in this way - see House of Liza. Their use of typography created a strong range of collateral from labels to posters and shop signage.
My initial problem to solve was to organise the heirachy of each letter to ensure its legibility.
At this point in time I wanted to make the decision to use her name rather than 'Man Repeller'. From my research I noticed that in most interviews she had to explain what a 'man repeller' is and it seemed that she had outgrown this reasoning. Obviously this branding is part of her identity but I think that I want to concentrate on her name and emphasise this. Her style and personality is something that shines through the man repeller label.
Playing with the heirachy was something that needed to be done through trial and error and also from asking others around me it allowed me to get others opinions.
Due to her name not being straight forward or predictable it is key for the audience to understand what I'm trying to communicate. However, through further collateral I will ensure that there is a simplified version of her name to reiterate it fully.
I think this version (above) is almost there but not quite due to the sizes of the characters being different sizes. This complicates the way the eye reads through the letters and also over complicates the order that the audience reads each letter. So, I am going to make all the characters the same size thus simplifying the outcomes.
I also kept all the letters on a the same horizontal lines as I thought this would neaten up the overall image and create a less complicated aesthetic.
This is going to be (for the moment) my initial layout, the image on the right - please ignore 'the man repeller' underneath as this was just to see how it looked to have something under it. Otherwise, this is the outcome I'm going to progress with.
Next I am going to refer back to the criteria I set originally and try to develop in this way, looking at how to progress it in strength so it will be recognised as a strong logo. By applying it onto different shapes to see how it translates.
Next I tried moving the text and the angle of it to see how it worked at a different angle. I think this is interesting and could be linked back to her slogan 'sartorial freedom'. This is something I am going to explore further as I think it's key for the logo not to become to constrained as this defies the entirety of her message and style.
With regards to the colours for the branding I think this is something that has a variety of options due to her use of colour. I have started by looking at current colours in fashion.
By adding the colour I think that it creates quite a flat and plain logo which is something I need to progress with, however I am going to get feedback from my progress crit and then continue to develop this logo.
