Development with Silent Movies

Progression with storyboard. By using post it notes and drawing key frames onto each one has allowed me to vary the timing and see how it could change the overall impact.

This was interesting with regards to this brief as it was over a shorter amount of time, allowing smaller tweaks to timing without leading to a knock on effect. Also the readability wasn't hugely important due to the subject being one single word rather than an entire concept and combination of both type and image.

I have also taken on board the feedback I wrote down previously in my project, just to recap what I said:

  • start using more colours and investigate their impacts
  • experiment with different composition background colours
  • follow more tutorials, or at least watch them if not appropriate, as they will help me increase my knowledge of aftereffects.

Obviously, these are initial projects on after effects so a chance to come to grips with the software, however, I have tried to apply some of what I am starting to use for my top ten progression.

I moved onto using 3D and the camera effects, initially, I wasn't quite sure how this would work but thought that it seemed appropriate when applying a different view. This effect was helped by the switching from one view to two.

Another really simple thing I found, but something that I had been stuck on for a while was the toggle hold keyframe, when I had initially tried to tackle this project this was something I was really wondering about. I thought I'd take note of this due to how much of a difference the knowledge made.

When trying to progress I looked back at the extensive storyboards that we had all spent so much time progressing with.

With particular focus on the one shown above. I wanted to try and look at both shadowing and developing 3D 'drops'.

I did some more storyboarding to just sketch some ideas and here are the videos I produced:

I really like the pace of this one, the short sharp zooms I think work well due to the flashing enlargement, if it was slower then I am not sure it would have enough impact. I also chose blue writing on black because I wanted to create a contrast that would ensure a clearer image through the use of type. I also chose a san serif type for these reasons too. A serif typeface would be too decorative and would create too much type for the image, creating a busier outcome. Upper case, was also intentional due to it's clarity.

In contrast the video below is a lot slower in pace, I wanted to use a bright colour in contrast with the white, mainly for aesthetic reasons. The choice, however, to use a serif typeface and both upper and lower case was due to it's appearance of a sign, I wanted it to look like a name of something recognisable so that the movement could be related to something familiar.

This was my third video, I decided to use an uncommon typeface, choosing Bauhaus for it's rounded curves and lack of serifs. It was a typeface that I had already considered with regards to the meaning of the word its lucidity was something that I liked. Due to the angular and quite sudden movements of the animation I think the smoothness of the typeface counteracts this. The flash at the end was to try and create some sort of drama to the movement. The choice of red being something that I thought might relate to drama and a crash drop.
